Choosing The Right Wooden Shed

When you need extra storage at your house, buying or building a shed is a great way to get it.  You can store all kind of outdoor equipment in a shed including bicycles, lawmowers, and gardening supplies.

With proper planning your shed can be as multifunctional as you need it to be.  Here are some tips on choosing from all the wooden sheds out there to find one that suits your needs.

#1.  Look in your storage areas and decide what you are going to use your shed for.  If you are planning on potting or doing garden activities, you will want to look at wooden garden sheds with a potting bench.

If you just want to store stuff like bike and lawn mowers you will need to check out  wooden storage sheds instead.  Make sure that your shed either has the right shelving and fixtures to store what you want in it, or that there is room to install the fixtures that you want.

#2. Decide if you want to build or buy.  Building is considerably less expensive than buying is.  But buying is easier and doesn't take as much time.   The choice is really up to you.   It just depends on whether you want to save time or money.

There are great shed plans available online and you can find wooden sheds for sale at most home improvement stores.  You can also find used wooden sheds on Craig's List, but make sure you thoroughly inspect the shed you are looking at before you buy it, so that you know you are getting a good deal and that the shed is in great shape.

#3.  Get a shed that is big enough.  Believe it or not, this is the single biggest mistake that people make when it comes to getting a shed that is right for them.  They build or buy too small and then don't have enough storage space.

To avoid this, come up with the size of shed that you think you want, and then add 30% to 50% to the size.  Then you will probably have the shed that actually works for you.  A larger shed doesn't take up a ton more room in your backyard, but it is worth it because you will have a lot more space.

#4. There is a huge range of quality available in different wooden sheds and this is something you should never skimp on. A well built shed will last for many years, while one of inferior quality will fall apart.

To tell if the shed is a quality product look at the type of wood used. Is it sturdy? Are the joints put together well? Do the door hinges work smoothly? All of these things are signs of quality.

No matter what type of structure you end up with, make sure that it is sturdy and well built.  That way it will be yours to enjoy for many years to come.
