Building With Free Shed Plans

I'm sure you have heard the saying "there is no such thing as a free lunch", and while it is true for the most part.  The internet has changed a lot of that.  Now you can get all kinds of things for free online.  Including free shed plans.

The free storage shed plans that you can find online are mostly for basic structures.  There is nothing to fancy or difficult.  If you want something more detailed you will probably have to buy wooden shed plans, but if you need basic than the free plans will probably work for you very well.

Pick The Plans You Want To Use

If you google "Free Shed Plans" you will come up with a list of sites that have free shed building plans. Many of these sites also offer paid plans for the bigger more elaborate sheds.

You can also find free shed plans at Popular Mechanics and other online versions of magazines.

When you are looking for your free garden shed plans you will want to pay attention to a couple of things. Better shed designs should include a materials list, a schematic, and detailed instructions on how to build your shed.

Once you have chosen the plan you want to use it is time to get started.

Go Shopping For Your Supplies.

Your first stop should be the home improvement store. Your plans should tell you exactly what you will need to buy and what length your boards should be.   Always buy a little bit extra just in case you need it.

When you are at the home improvement store, ask about them cutting the lumber to size for you.  This will save you a bunch of time in the long run and the cost is usually minimal.

If you find that you can't get your supplies for your shed home with you, then you will may want to rent a truck.  Most home improvement centers have these available for a nominal fee.

Remember Your Foundation

A lot of times free shed plans will forget to tell you to start with the foundation. It is very important that you build your shed on the right foundation if you want it to last. You can build a wooden floor supported by concrete piers, a wooden floor supported on skids, or a concrete slab to place your deck on.

A good foundation will help to make you shed stable and will keep it from rotting on the ground.

The following video shows in 1 minute and 35 seconds over 7 hours of work of a man building his shed foundation.

Use Your Free Shed Plans To Build Your Shed

The easiest way to build a shed is with help.  One of the best ways to get the help you will need to get it built is to schedule a work party.  Order some pizza, invite some friends over and start putting your shed up.

With help it shoud take one or two weekends to get your shed up once you lay your foundation.  You will need 1 or two helpers at a time, so it may be wise to schedule people in shifts.

Move Your Stuff In.

This is the big payoff.  After you have built your shed, you are going to want to move your stuff into it.  Clear out your garage and basement and put all of that hard work to good use.

Portable shelter 18 months ago

Another alternative which can be completed in significantly less time is a portable shelter. A portable shelter accomplishes the same thing as a wooden shed, however, they can be assembled in a few days and cost significantly less than a wooden shelter. Portable shelters can be anchored to any surface.
