What Does Tattoo Removal Cost?

By

Tattoos are forever... at least that is how they used to be.  Fortunately, you no longer need skin grafts to get rid of tattoos, but you DO need to know what tattoo removal options are available, how much they cost, and whether or not they actually work, otherwise you are just wasting your money.

The two main options available today are tattoo removal creams and liquids and tattoo laser removal clinics.   We will look at what works and what each one costs.

Tattoo Removal Costs for Creams and Liquids

When you are looking at tattoo removal costs, one of the things you want to look at is does the method you are considering actually work?

According to the Mayo Clinic's website there is no evidence that any of the tattoo removal creams or liquids on the market actually work.  And please remember that with photoshop it is super easy to fabricate the evidence that they do work.

So while the creams and liquids available on the market are much less expensive than laser removal - costing between $30 and $100 dollars an ounce - they aren't effective for home tattoo removal.  It is better to save your money towards visiting a dermatologist to get that tattoo gone.

Tattoo Removal Costs - Laser Methods

The most effective way to get rid of a tattoo currently is to visit a tattoo removal clinic or dermatologist that uses laser removal methods.

The reasons that lasers work so well is because they can reach beneath the skin and target the ink in the tattoos.  They break up the ink and allow your body to dispose of it.  This is not an instant process and in most cases takes between 3 and 9 visits if your doctor is using state of the art equipment.

Laser tattoo removal is expensive.  The procedures are generally charged by the amount of laser pulses you need or the square inch of your tattoos.   Typically charges start at around $100 a visit for a small 2 inch by 2 inch tattoo and go up to $800 dollars a visit or more for a very large tattoo or multiple tattoos.

The good news is that many clinics offer 100% financing, to make the procedure more affordable.

When Should You Consider Tattoo Removal?

If your tattoos are preventing you from getting employment, or if your tattoos are preventing you from moving on with your life, then you should consider tattoo removal options.

But did you know that most laser tattoo removal clinics can simply remove part of your tattoo?  This is a great option if you have your ex's name on your body, or if part of your tattoo is offensive to a new life, but you want to keep the rest of one.  For many people this is a much less expensive option.

Who Should Do Your Tattoo Removal?

You should only ever trust your skin to a board certified doctor or dermatoligist who has done many tattoo removal procedures.  Always ask about the success rates of the people preforming the removals and get cost estimates before you start.  Then if multiple people are available in your area compare costs to get the best deal possible.
